Christchurch outdoor stores open?

in

Will be down in ChCh this weekend for a wedding. Might be a good chance to chase down a pack and support the local stores.  Any outdoor shops open, and where?

Headtorch recommendations

in

Some years ago now I bought a Petzl Myolite 3 and, well, it sucks. At least it does now - I seem to recall it performed better when I first bought it. Or I hope it did, otherwise I've been struggling for years with a dud. Anyway...

Even with new batteries, the halogen barely functions and the LEDs, while sufficient to do something at arms length, are pretty average for anything else. So I'm looking for alternatives.

Crag Pack, Suggestions?

in

Figured here was as good a place to ask as anywhere.

Looking to get a pack for day trips to the crag, Something that will fit a rope, draws, shoes and food and water. I was thinking about 35-40 litres as I have larger 60-70 litre packs which are too big for just a day of sport climbing.

Any thoughts on this would be great.

Cheers

Racking Extendable runners

in

I found this video on another site and thought it was brilliant - maybe others are sharper than I and have picked up on it already, but for those that haven't - a one-handed method for re-racking your extendable runners:

To Leash or not to leash - that is the question

in

This blog by Will Gadd is pretty good. It looks deep into some sacrosanct dogma of old school vs. new school ice climbing and the latest trend towards mountain climbing, hard ice and mixed climbing in general.

I have to confess that I am pretty much a gaitor, leash, third tool and screamer sort of guy.
