NZ Mountain Film Fest Christchurch screening

The NZ Mountain Film Festival is being held on 15 September 2011 at the Aurora Centre, Burnside High School at 8pm. Tickets are $20 and are available from Bivouac Tower Junction, Christchurch. The films being shown are a selection from the 2011 Wanaka Film Festival. All proceeds from the talk are going towards the restoration of Lockwood Shelter, Temple Basin.

NZ Rock Festival 2012, Whanganui Bay.

Planning is under way for the NZ Rock Festival 2012, to be held at Whanganui Bay.

 

Last summer's festival was a blast, with loads of climbers enjoying the hospitality of the bay locals as well as some great climbing.

Kiwis climb new route on Koh-e-Baba-Tangi, Afghanistan.

Christine Byrch and Pat Deavoll summitted Koh-e-Baba-Tangi (6515m) in the Wakhan Corridor (Afgahnistan) on the 9th August. Five days to the summit with some good steep ice, then 2 days to decend the West Ridge (line of the original 1963 ascent). Theirs is only the second climb of the mountain, done via a new route up the N'NW ridge.

Kev Nicholas and John Entwisle have been working on the the Twisted Sister replacing unrated chain links on runner bolts, improving anchors, cleaning climbs and adding a few bolts to dangerous runouts. Others have been in action on the steep left handside of the crag, but nothing is known of what they have done, except that it looks hard. John and Kevin's efforts have been on more moderate routes as listed below:

Whanganui Bay Rock Festival - January 2011

Climbers are invited to the inaugural NZ Rock Festival, at Whanganui Bay, on Auckland Anniversary Weekend 2011 (the 29th and 30th January). This festival will bring together climbers and the Whanganui Bay Trustees to enhance future relationships between these key groups.

As well as stacks of climbing at the premier crag in the North Island, the festival will include: a bolting seminar run by the New Zealand Alpine Club; working bees to improve crag access and route identification; a workshop on how to make a hangi (which will also provide the Saturday evening meal) and entertainment, including a bonfire, on the beach.

Here's the latest update & outline of the festival

Saturday 29 January 2011:

7.30 - Registration tent open (also open Friday night) - ($35 per person - you get hangi/Entertainment/Workshops/climbing and camping fees - one payment for 3 days / 2 nights). Please try and register before Powhiri. No pay no stay policy - casual climbing is closed this weekend.

9.30 - Powhiri/Karakia by local Kaumatua.

10am - Lunch - Participate in working bee / working groups are: Hangi Prep, Route Identification, Firewood collection.

2pm - Workshops

-        NZAC - Re Bolting

-        Hang Dog - Dynamic Belay - How to fall safely, advanced anchor construction

-        Hang Dog - Climbing Styles and Techniques - How to climb harder with less effort

3pm - Group of volunteer climbers  "Learn to lay a Hangi" ( Heating of stones and placement of food into ground / Pull Hangi out at 5.30pm).

6pm - Hangi - Have meal with Bay Trustees and local Whanau (families).

7pm - Historical talk about the Bay and the tribe "Ngati Te Maunga" by locals.

8pm - 12am - DJ Willie G / Bon Fire.
