Thank you Graham form here for letting me know about this crampon.

A preliminary preview is on Dane's site here  http://coldthistle.blogspot.com/2011/08/new-petzl-lynx-crampon.html

Anyway it is cool in so many ways.

Firstly it comes with both a metal bail front clip as well as a plastic clip that goes over the top of the boot.

Secondly it can take 1 or 2 front points, and the points are easily replaceable.

Thirdly when using the mono-point you can mount it in the center or closer to your big toe.

The front points are vertical with horizontal top sections to reduce shearing thru alpine snow/ice.

It's designed as a replacement crampon for the older M10 model.  Due to it's functionality this crampon will no doubt be heavier than more specialized crampons, but as an all in one solution for the climber who wishes to purchase only 1 crampon that can handle all conditions then it might end up being very successfull.

In my own opinion the lightest weight crampons lose their functionality in the cruddy snow conditions that we get here.  I think we need a crampon with plenty of long down points, instead of the shorter and fewer downpoints that we see on modern crampons which are oriented more for frozen waterwall / mixed climbing, than they are for general mountaineering.

This new model from Petzl, the Lynx, seems to have all bases covered.

I look forward to reading the reviews when it is released, and finding out about the online price compared to such damn good crampons as the Sabretooth by Black Diamond.

I think I read that they're going to retail for $300 US -so who knows what they'll cost here. Pretty pricey

Trouble with great crampons, they don't wear out. And, if you are like me, they stay on the possession list for a way too long time. So unless you are a first time buyer, you'll have to make the decision whether or not to relegate the well loved, previously state-of-the-art, units to the gear closet.

I won't but if you need to buy a pair of crampons that will adapt to many different boots, perform well in a range of conditions and last a lifetime. These probably fit the bill.

Yes but the problem with the US the price never includes taxes... and there are taxes for everything (admittedly most are waived if you buy on line across state borders but even so there is no certainty. Currently it is just under $300 NZ

The  Lynx Crampon is going to be released in January by Petzl, so any pricing will merely be an indication as it is not for sale.
