Removal of DOC intention system in arthurs pass national park (and others!)

Where was the public consultation on this? Is this happening nationwide? How can a web based system (probably hosted and monitered offshore) be superior to a person based system. I can't count the number of times i've asked local advice from frontline DOC staff that has often ended in me changing my plans to suit local conditions. Then using the paper intentions system to track these changes as I can't contact my usual intentions person due to lack of cell coverage.

Beacons or a SPOT are the way to go these days I think. A lot of money though.
