Following a via ferrata accident on Thursday the 5th of May 2011 we launched - by reason of precaution - a voluntary product safety alert to inspect our SCORPIO via ferrata lanyards (L60 and L60CK) manufactured prior to March 2005. This alert was launched on 13th May.

Our internal investigation and analysis of our manufacturing procedures specific to the production of tear webbing energy absorbers has identified a weakness which could explain the defect leading to the cause of this accident.

As a consequence and even though the probability of this defect recurring remains very low, we have decided to take the following actions:

  1. Temporary stoppage of all Petzl tear webbing lanyard production.
  2. Temporary stoppage of the sale of all stock of SCORPIO and ABSORBICA tear webbing lanyards for inspection before resuming sales.
  3. Extension of the product safety alert of 13.05.11 to include all Petzl SCORPIO energy absorbing lanyards sold up to 19th May 2011 (up to serial number 11137****).

You'll find in the Pro section a dedicated page regarding ABSORBICA actions.

If you possess a SCORPIO via ferrata lanyard as detailed above we ask you to:

The via ferrata lanyards ZYPER and ZYPER VERTIGO are not concerned by this alert for inspection.
You may continue to use these products, whilst respecting the conditions of use, maintenance and inspection outlined in their respective technical notices.

It's impressive how pro-active Petzl are at fronting up when failures of their products are discovered.  I suppose being such a huge company they can afford to take a hit and deal the expense of product recalls and replacements because they are successful at making and selling a great range of so many other products.

It's also good to see Petzl is likely gonna help pay something to the climber who was seriously injured.

I think so...

The problem is, I have two L60 WL: SCORPIO VERTIGO WLs (says "L60700C" on the tag), exactly as shown on this page: http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/via-ferrata-lanyards/scorpio-series

.....and according to this page: http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/news/products-news-0/2011/05/13/product-safety-alert-request-inspection-scorpio-via-ferrata

....I must "contact us via the Petzl distributor in your country."

Apparently there is no "self inspection" for the Scorpios. Frown

Of course, I had a look anyway, and this is what I see:

two dark grey tacks on the ring (lanyard) end, and three on the harness end.

I would've thought that is *good*, but the instructions for the ABSORBICAs talk about 4 black tacks, so I am not so sure any more...

Any info or opinions you might have, that might save me the hastle of sending them to Switzerland for inspection, would be awesome! (and much appriciated Laughing)

I will send you the pdf that details the inspection. It has a link to the normal PPE inspection, so you can check those points as well while you are at it, and be totally sure you are safe ( I think you are from what you have said so far). PM me your e mail address to send the pdf to

The Absorbica is an industrial Absorber. That's probably what's confusing you.
