Anyone want to recommend a good pair? Ive heard the Sportiva Makalus are nice but little expensive.

Makalu's areover rated - I have seen more wrecked feet in them than I have seen since RD's

Im at Aoraki next year doing 2nd year (mountain and rock)... So anything that entails. I already have a pair of 5.10 CampFours so looking at something better than hiking boots.

R&R have a good range... Cheers :)

Anyone have experience with the Scrapa Escapes? I have wide feet and never fitted into any La Sportiva climbing shoes so I am worried this will be the norm

scarpa have an even narrower profile than sportiva. i've got flat, wide (albeit tiny) feet and the sportiva Evo's fit perrrrfect. even better when you find them at 50% off in the states with cheep as shipping!

Slab climbing in 2 easy steps.
1. lips against rock
2. suck...

I just got some Scarpa Escapes here in Australia... worked out about the same retail as a NZ pair of boots.

Now I've only got jacket, pants, gaitors, socks and gloves to get Sealed

I did a lot of research before buying my boots. There is actually a surprising amount of factors that go to support the quality of a boot... (a good cobbler can point them out) However, the difference between the major brands like Asolo and Scarpa, Meindl etc etc is very small. Rule of thumb, if it's made in Europe (Germany/Italy) it's probably a good boot. Don't buy to brand, buy to fit your feet. My feet are Scarpa shaped. I would have happily purchased other brands, but Scarpa just fitted my foot better.
