...yeah but bad that because he could not be saved. Because he thought that "god" could intervine...How? Why? Stop a Lion from being a Lion...ummm no.

Ok the "how" - if god could save all people who put faith in him(him only because thats the way the masses have given god gender) then millions of people would not have died in wars, natural disasters (natural...created by god? or are natural disaters satan's work only?), or diseases...the list goes on.

There is no god....unless....you are god.

Before we get into a deep philosophic nightmare (as these things do) - back to the smack - I won't be trying to get god to make my next send happen...it will all come from within, as it always has, if god were to make my send happen, i'd be god damned annoyed!! err - that doesn't quite sound right ;)

Poor guy died believing that animal instinct would be overidden by an omnipotent force...he should have tried it with a tortoise.

Actually why we're on it - a similar event happened a while back - a martial artist thought he was so shit hot he placed himself in a cage with a Leopard...figuring he'd use his "awesome 10th Dan skill" against natures most volatile cat....WRONG. Dead in 5 seconds flat. no remorse or regret from said Leopard.

Lesson for today? Don't mess with the predatos of old, who have been killing our kind since day x (proven on Discovery Channel!!)

aight.

rich, haven't you heard of daniel in the lions' den? In a recent poll, something like 63% of Americans consider the bible to be literally true and the word of god.

ok..so now that my big speel got erased "due to god not liking what i was writing" (the fact that I closed the browser window by accident BEFORE posting is the reason)

the nut shell version:

There's no god
You are god (assuming there is no god)
Religion is a control mechanism
Governments fail because.....they fail to control religion.
Life without religion = Anarchy (good or bad this is the describable state)

Climbing is primal....why?

Think back to how/when you first climbed (as a child) - you know the moments.

With climbing being so integral before religious texts were manifested by men...what does that make climbing? Something worth worshiping?

The above is of course IMHO....oh yes it is.

So, how about if 'God' decides that the world is over populated, and 'he' needs a way to get rid of some people? Purely bad luck to those involved...
Applies to war, natural diasters, famines etc
Not saying I believe this, just putting it out there :)

why yes dragon, we cannot second guess the will of an onmiscient, omnipotent and omnipresent god. he is inherently unfathomable to us measly little peons.

which is why its can be ultimately frustrating and futile to try to reason-our religion too much. being founded on faith and all, its one big slippery sloper.

ps. rich, i don't think i'm god, but i'm happy to take your word that you are. my test of that will involve no lions, but rather just the wish that you arrange for a little windfall to tidy up my student loan, cheers

Jesus said that we should not put our God to the test... so why exactly would you go against what God said (asuming God and Jesus are one and the same) and expect him to save you?

Just something to think about....

I think that people that put faith in God generally realise and accept that he has created the world and set it in motion, giving each of us our own freewill. God never intervenes in freewill, otherwise it would not be freewill. Things like wars are largely outcomes of various people's freewill decisions, and we only have ourselves to blame for them. God also very seldom intervenes in matters of natural occurence, since he has set the world on its course. Millions of people would not have died if we didn't do silly things like live next to volcanoes, or beside levees, build rediculously high buildings in earthquake prone areas...the list goes on.

Diseases are trickier, but to look at it from another angle, people that put faith in God, believe that they will be going to eternal paradise with Him when they die. So it shouldn't really matter to them how or when they die.

Religion has been used as a control mechanism, I would not say that it is in essence a means of control.

There are many things more common than a lack of control over religion, that bring down governments.

Life without religion does not equal anarchy.
Life without coercion or governance equals anarchy.

oh...i said i didn't want to go down the slippery slope of philosophic debates on religion. I actually have no problem with religion as a means to try and and keep the peace/control. Sure "in reality" it does not work out this way - people are still killing others because they don't believe in x,y,z religion.

Back to the guy diving in the cage...what do you think motivated this person to test his theory?

Its all very backward. Belief and faith are one thing...but common sense (and reason?) has just got to be more valid. A lion is a lion. You are going to get your ass kicked by Lions.

Rather than poke fun at the poor fellow, I just feel sorry that he was misguided for whatever reason. Absolutes in life are hard to come by. Death and Taxes are right up there.

it may be that 2.1 billion people believe in Christianity and all its forms, about 1.3 believe in Islam and how bout that 1.1 billion who secular,non-religious,agnostic,athesist. Next is Hinduism about 900 Million.

How did a third of the planet become to believe in Christianity??? Crusades...bloody and brutal. Not a nice picture really.

www.reasoned.org - have an open mind...

I don't think his faith had deluded him into thinking God would save him, it seems to me that he was trying to perform some sort of experiment to see if God did exist or not. I guess he should have picked a different experiment.

I do agree that logic needs to be more prevailent in religion.

Well, As I said Before The Man was a martyr. My views about this, based solely on the linked article, is that -he wanted to show us all the Non-existance of God.He knew well in advance that God would probably not save him.He was just out there saying- Would my dying show you people that God does not exist!! Well then, here it is!!
So yea, like i said, this idea, as warped as it may be, is just an opinion and just a point to ponder on.Another angle on the whole affair.

Maybe, that seems kind of lofty though, there are other ways to attempt to prove God's non-existence.

I reckon he just wanted to kill himself in an interesting way, and that God thing was a line that came to him in the spur of the moment.

Nice 1 TBG...agreed, its in the realm of possibilty...bit like that guy who wanted to be eaten(In Germany I think?)...and the guy who said yep...i want to be doing the eating! Totally consensual...but as it turns out, immoral to the masses. So much for freedom of choice.

lol. I find it amusing how the article describes one of the lions to have a shaggy mane...do the others have chemically straighted manes or dreads? :) Also, the man might have been speaking in Mandarin...I don't think lions speak Mandarin.

yeeees, true. But I also wanted the discussion to look at other things in the article. We can babble about god and people's religious motivations but that would get us no where as its probably one of the longest going arguments of all time.

The fact that the lion had a shaggy mane on the other hand is funny, and provides for new discussion. Wonder if the lion likes Fat Freddy's and Bob?

On that topic, (although kinda morbid) I thinks points have to go to the guy who committed suicide by... Paying for parachuting lessons, jumping out of the plane after completing them, then whipping out a pair of scissors and cutting the parachute pack off him. Original, I thought...

Common sense may let you see god, but logic does not. Religion sidesteps logic with some nice little paradoxes.

example.

Go creates man in his own image, which can only be described as vanity. Yet does not prove his existence and instead relies on blind faith in followers, how very humble.

There are some believers who preach ''you don't get to heaven by just being a good person, you must be a devoted & avid worshipper''. Does this mean someone like Big Ed (of Everest fame), is going to hell, after devoting most of his life to improving the quality of life for hundreds (thousands ?) of Nepalese. And someone like Brian Tamaki would go to heaven just cos he's 'in the industry'. (this would seem unfair to me). Big Ed has never relied on, or believed in, any god to see him through tough times.

Your family should be your church ! You should be your own god ! Believe it or not - it is possible to have/achieve almost anything you want if you have some smarts, some guts, & the support of the people around you. That cheesy but very true line comes to mind ' this is not a dress rehearsal'. What a rant ! But thats all I have to say about that. Peace out !

Wow, I had no idea that link would spark such good thread. Some interesting thoughts.

As far as I see it, this is just an unfortunate event for anyone that cared about him. He clearly needed a good degree of psychological help if he truly thought that a deity would save him from lions.

I guess he needs to win a Darwin award for removing himself from the gene pool. The less fanatical religious headcases on this planet the better.
