hakataramea
noticed this massive cliff face on the hakataramea highway at waihao corner. does anyone know much about this place as it looks like some cool cliffs.
Sounds like you are describing the face near the Waihao Forks pub. There are scarps like this dotted all over South Canterbury and North Otago. The limestone is most likely to be very soft, similar or worse than Island Cliff valley.
I've not looked closely but my guess would be no.
I always found it was worth doing a proper inspection of "rubbish rock." Sometimes you end up with a real gem!
Like the Bo Peep slab at Pohara
I no longer live down south and rarely get down there so I've never had the time to look hard at the crags around Waimate and towards Haka. They are numerous but well spaced. I took a good look at some of the crags down the Waitaki Valley around Kokoamo near Duntroon, some years ago. Despite their proximity to Island cliff Valley, none of them showed much or any potential for climbing. There are large blocks at the base of some crags and there may be a problem or two there if you looked but the way these blocks are constructed, with rows of flat plates sticking out of a very weak limestone layer, I couldn't even find anything that kept me entertained, and I dont boulder that hard. I took pix but they are long, long gone.

how about some pic?
