food
in my oppinion not enough pointless things are going on so iv decided to start 1. lets find out what food people in the nz climbing family enjoy eating while out at the rock.
for me i enjoy a nice can of creamy rice!!!!! yum i must say. but always take away ur garbage!!!
I have never tried cremed rice, but it looks so disgusting, I cannot believe people can bring themselves to put that in their mouth.
For a day at the head I always stop at the Bakery in Naenae to get a roll, which are delicious, chicken and cream cheese, beef, whatever, it's all good.
Steak and cheese pies are also way up there. But really you can't go past bread and marmite.
Marmite blows, Vegemite rules.
Oranges are always good, as they help with fluid levels as well. Dried fruits and nuts a nice and quick to snack on whist belaying. I'd take muesli bars if any of the manufactures made deasent ones, but noone does anymore  . Its all candy now.
fruit is good but nothing beats a whole cooked chicken, kalamata olives, fresh baguettes, feta, crisp salad and a brace of chilled chardonnay the whole carried in a wicker basket and served by outrageously gorgeous neophytes beside a gin clear stream whilst gently fanned by a warm gentle breeze... o and a cold steak is good for power
En...the pursuit of pleasure really is the most important thing in life...
My normal menu consists of:
1. Bread/cheese/salami
2. Bananas
3. Dried fruit
Oh...and a chicken/vege pie from the pie shop on Rickett Rd in T.A.
A six pack of Carlton Colds used to do me well...these days its Banana’s, Chocolate of some sort and coloured water
However, Picked this one up from Paul Nicholas:
Chock Muesli Bar dipped in Nuttella...well, can't say I wasn't sceptical at first, but man it can’t be beat for crag food – 1 bar of this stuff will last you at least half a day!
Can’t imagine the kilojoules in that thing! ;)
crossonts, ham, tomato, lettuce, chocolate bar, powerade and some nice cold water. followed by rediclous amounts of cold beer when i get home. gotta be good for ya!
i have one of those petzl climbing knives and have used it for climbing once!!!!other wise it comes in handy alot to cut my tomato or slice open my crossonts!i gotta be careful though gravityslave has a keen eye for fresh crossonts and will know right away when i start noushing down!!!!
I'm sorry but this just doesn't sit well with me. Vegemite is the scum of the earth, it couldn't hold a candle to marmite.

I wouldn't want it to, marmite is such toxic tar that it's probably highly flammable, if not explosive. Im fairly sure that marmite is made out of recycled road bitumen.
Ahh, now we have some smack to talk.
a tip i picked up from some jerries at font was to buy these really yummy smoked sausages called 'Knacki' - one of those in a bit of fresh baguette with some mustard was full on yum.
Oh it's ON. It's on like donkey kong.........
Doesn't Marmite taste like a candle ?
Doesn't Marmite taste like a candle ?
Why hasn't anyone said something about Ham Sammies. Are you all sports climbing losers? Or worse boulderers?
Sorry!
I do take ham sandwiches or pb&j, when I don't have any cabonossies left. I am just too lazy to make sammies when I can just grab some sausages.
because we are not retarded Americans and this is not RockClimbing.com
Hey! I resemble that remark
Anyway, Americans wouldn't say 'sammies'. Trust me, we have no idea wtf Ozzies are talking about most of the time (of course, I don't think anyone else does either....)!
PS, no offence Jim, as far as I know you aren't an Australian, it is just that 'sammies' is such an Ozzie thing to say.
one of these days I will learn to spell properly
Well origonally this was not pointed at you or an attempt to cause offence.......
but did you mean to say 'resent'? because that just kind of proves my point.....
but did you mean to say 'resent'? because that just kind of proves my point.....
You are welcome to read it whatever way you wish (I wrote what I wrote on purpose), no offence (has been/will be) taken.
PS, the pb&j should have definitely tagged me as an american.
Fair enough looks like I was wrong then, It's just one of those things about rc.com I hate, all trad climbers eat ham sandwiches and all boulderers wear beanies, or so they would have you believe.
Not nessaserially, peanut butter and jam is quite a common kiwi fav.
Thanks for biting 1080, I was hoping to get a rise out of someone with that one.
Harsh...
 careful, we shoot back (and have bigger guns)
This is a good topic,
What else.....
Calcutta Korma leftover from the night before in tupperware
Bombay Bazooka Butter chicken leftover NBIT (Night before in T'ware)
Pies from Doughbin, doughnuts from Doughbin, If you're in Arrowtown heading to QT, Pies from that place on the corner (butter chicken pie recommended)
Tuna in a can (Vindaloo flavour) with rice crackers - water to chase
Tim Tams, thermos for the slam ("did you know you can use Tim Tams as a straw...?")
Apples, bananas, oranges, MANDERINS!
Almonds, chocolate cake, carrot cake is really good also.
The BEST though was going to do rock route in mountains, bivvying and a friend pulled out a chocolate cheesecake thing with white chocolate swirls. Best ever!
Marmite blows dogs...fullstop, period. Etc.
Did you know...that in OZ (in the 30's or whenever Marmite was spawned) they were going to bring out a competing brand...guess what it was called....
I'll let you work it out...its kinda cryptic.
As for Wussy Sport climbers and boulderers...lets not get personal.
....actually...lets!
So what does that leave?? Wannabe Trad, Alpine, Big Wall, Solo, Aid, Top Rope, Oxygen less ascent, No chalk, barefoot, Ground up, Dope smoking, Beer swilling, lycra strectching lads and lassies....from around the globe.
We all know Vegemite takes Marmite jars .... you know where  8)
hola from the f*cking cold far north !!
as far as crag fuel - orange gummi bears. sending fuel of the future.
You think it is cold now, wait until January!
Okay, have to ask......why orange? Is it the extra Vitamin C?
Damn, the secret is out. BUY BUY BUY orange gummi bears before the shortage hits.
Gummi bears are terrible, you get energy quickly and burn out, it's all about the high glycemic index. That's why you need real food........ pies, steak and cheese or steak and mushroom are great. But not vegemite.
Cashews, unsalted. An apple, but not two. Cream donuts!!!
1080...have you not heard of the five major food groups?
1. Alcohol
2. Grease
3. Sugar
4. Nicotine
5. Caffeine

I think you forgot the naked tribe !
how about my favourite:body fat and creek water if you are lucky. beats the hell outta carrying all that extra crap!!!!!
1. Alcohol
2. Grease
3. Sugar
4. Nicotine
5. Caffeine
Thats right :!: 4 and 5 are the breakfast of champions :)
Yeah and if you don't mind someone elses body fat they can carry it for ya
Gingernuts are #1, great power/weight ratio.
severe lack of castle hill input in this thread, so......
sheffield bakery.
problem remedied
many a good times at "WAC drive through coffee with hot blond coffee girls"in christchurch feasting on a number 4 and number 5 before venturing up to the crags for a days climbing.
Is there anywhere like a supermarket close to Castle Hill that food can be purchased at a reasonable price so I can spend a long time there without having to actually go to Christchurch?
HAHAHAHA
...erhem....sorry! I didn't mean to laugh......or spit milk out my nose...
no, the closest thing to a 'supermarket' closer to Castle Hill than Chch is a 'general store'. Not to be sneezed at, but definitely not worth the savings in money/petrol/time for serious grocery shopping.
Well yeah I did kind of know that, I meant something like a general store.... So does that mean the prices are well much jacked up there or is there just no food. We will be living off beans and noodles, no serious grocery shopping will occur.
Well, it depends.....
If you head up to Arthur's Pass, they have some basic stuff, but at a premium. If you head back down into Darfield, you might be slightly better off (better selection/prices). I am not sure what the possbilities are in Springfield or Sheffield though (slim to none!?).
Just go eat at springfield pub every night, it's pretty cheap. The store/cafe across the road does have some basics though which will probably get you through,
DELETED

AAAAHHHHH!!! No offense, but you need to stop writing like you are texting on a mobile phone! At least I could more or less understand what this post was about, as opposed to a couple others of yours.
Sorry, just had to get that off my chest :P
Anyway, that is a good question. I know my group tend to have their favourite 'crag foods'. Mine is Verkerk's Cabanossys and muesli bars. One of the others I climb with tends to have either a rice-ball or pie, and one other has cans of tuna more often than not.
Oh, and then there's the Cookie Man!
