Climbing Thailand :)!
23 February 2010 - 6:26pm
Hopefully heading to Thailand around mid July this year and pretty keen to get into some climbing around Phi Phi and Railay Bay.
Has anyone climbed here recently?? Few questions:
1. How much of my own gear should I take?? (main issue is the rope due to its weight and size in luggage...)
2. How easy would it be find a climbing partner around July?? What would be the best way to do this?
Any extra tips or info would be appreciated! Any must do climbs?

In July - prob only true climbers there / stray tourists haha. But on the whole not too many people at that time of year. So finding a partner might be a hit and miss situation... you might find one or two people there who don't have partners and then you're set or you might find a bunch of paired up climbers... On the main beach it's not hard to find a belayer though. I've only been in peak season so I'm going off what I've heard / guesses...
In terms of gear, I would suggest taking a 60m rope (50 limits the routes you can do, 70m ideal... which doesn't help your weight problem though...) and draws too (in peak a lot of climbs hve draws on them but in off-peak you'll prob need to put up your ownones). Climbing is pretty much all in Tonsai with a few crags around Raillay / Phra-Nang (Koh Phi Phi has a bit but it's expensive out there, unless you're keen to head there for a specific reason stay on the mainland and buy the new guide too so you know the bolts).
Bit of a rant hope it helps!
