California Climber on Exchange at University of Canterbury, Looking for climbing buddies/a home :)
Hey All Y'all Kiwi Climbers,
My name is Alex Javier and I am a 22 year old University of California, Berkeley student who will be on exchange at the Univeristy of Canterbury in Christchurch/Lincoln this February through June (I am already feeling the stoke)! Here in Cali I study forestry and stream ecology and leisure by backpacking, bouldering and sport climbing. I am posting here in search of a) climbing contacts and b) a place to live when I arrive in Christchurch, around Feb 10th. I'm laidback, chiller-type who likes to spend his time practicing yoga and lamenting the current state of our globalized civilization and the havoc it has wrought on our ecosystems. After living in an apartment, a student cooperative of 60+ people, and a house of 9, the prospect of moving back into a dormatory setting with freshmen is just too terrifying, and living in isolation with other exchange students seems like a waste of a cultural experience (plus, living with climbers would provide indespensible beta). I have been described as a "good roommate" and am deeply committed to making friends, sharing space, building community, and respecting the rules/agreements that that community has set. Moving to a new place is daunting, but meeting people can make it worlds better. With that, hit me up if you're into climbing this fall, or want to chat more about a potential living arrangement. For the latter, a skype date or email may be in order.
If you get down to Wanaka for a spell, which you should do 'cause it's good, plus enjoy mountains, birds, rivers, water. Give us a bell at the local internet cafe:)

Come and visit us for a boulder while you're in Auckland. Even if it's only for a few days.
You'll be able to find someone on the FB page to get a lift out with I'm sure.
Are you studying forestry at Canterbury? I study forestry here at UC, always good to have more people to climb with, can't help with a place to stay though I'm afraid.
I'm pretty keen for some sport climbing in the next few months, probably going to leave bouldering for a couple of months, (I am recovering from injury) but thats when the temps are good at Castle Hill anyway. Send us a message on here when you get to chch.
Hey Javi, I'm a climber living in Christchurch. I'm an ex/long-time climber still fit and active here in Christchurch.
I have a room available in Halswell which is the about the closest place to Lincoln Uni as well as Canterbury Uni.
Lincoln is 15 minutes drive away and Canterbury Uni is just 10 minutes drive away plus the buses stop outside here every half hour.
My house has safe storage and off street parking, and I have 6 laying free range hens so if you like eggs then you will like this place.
Rent is NZ$110 per week for a decent sized room with a double bed and which also includes electricity, local area phone (not tolls), and approx 10GB of wireless internet bandwidth that you can use 100% of every month. The room also includes a fan heater and electric blanket for the bed.
I'm a climber and have been for 30 years so will always be ready to show you around the local crags as well as the indoor facilities. You do not need to be a tenant in order to enjoy a climbing experience, I am often free and up for anything.
regards, Peter

If I lived in Christchurch you'd totally be in with that post. Good luck!
