An American in Taupo. What to climb?

I just arrived in Taupo on the 11th (from Seattle), and will be here for a few months, visiting my brother.  I've been doing a bit of research online, and it looks like there isn't a lot of local bouldering to be done.  I've already been out to Kinloch (which is just fine for me), but I'm intereseted in some other spots that locals can speak for.  I'm not an elite climber by any means (climbing mostly v4s), having just gotten back into it in May, after many years off.  I'm going through a bit of a withdraw already, having been away from my bouldering gym for a week. Thinking I might just start climbing trees.

Also curious about the climbing communities around the area?  I see there's a "need a partner" forum, but don't see a ton of stuff posted.

Na, Mojozone is a bit deader than Cascadeclimbers for example, however, I have met climbers from here to go climbing with - worth a posting for sure. Taupo has a fair number of climbers.

Bouldering - head to waitomo or down to wellington

Whanganui Bay

Kawakawa bay

Mangaoekewa

many others - you just gotta be prepared to drive for a few hours.

hey, if you want to met some Taupo folk go to the AC Baths rock wall.  Monday nights are when most people climb there.

Life is short, art is long, opportunity fleeting, experimenting dangerous, reasoning difficult

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll check out the Baths wall for sure.  My brother took me by one morning, but it wasn't open yet.  I'll pop down this Monday.

I've read a lot about some fabulous climbing on the west side of Lake Taupo, and a bunch on the south island.  Wish there were some closer spots.  Maybe I should get a car while I'm here.  I'll post up on the "partner" forum, and see if I can't find some crew mates.

That's the Whanganui Bay that Graham mentioned. It is definitely sweet!

Kawakawa Bay is on the north side, and just as good (maybe even better?). :-)

Cool.  I'll just plan to make a few day trips (or spend a few days in those areas, which might be better).

Thanks for all the suggestions!

You will need to team up with locals as some of the access to places can be tricky - Whanganui Bay for example frequently has washouts on the road plus is on Maori land so there is a bit of protocol to observe.
