Whanganui Bay Labour Weekend Trip

| Being my first real camping mission n all I was quite looking forward to it, but the last minute admin wasn't fun - the weather was looking quite shite and typical for a long weekend, so it was all a bit grim Friday night. However all good things come to those that wait, after getting a late night email from Shane directing us to join the crew at Bryces in the morn - suddenly I was hanging out to hit the crag, I couldn't sleep but when 5:30 in the am rolled around on Saturday I wished I had, 20mins later I called up Jenni and hit the road. In a smidge over 2 hours later we met up with the rest of the crew at Bryces. It appears some solid drinking and bouldering had taken place the night before and some rather sad looking fellows emerged the worse for wear - the clear winner in those stakes was Mr 'I don't do mornings' Morgan. A round of big breakfasts and coffee later everyone was fired up the convoy to Whanganui bay began! | ||
Along the way - bridgeswing anyone ? | that'd test your Mettle | Bouldering in Mangakino |
| The bouldering in Mangakino had to be seen to be believed, nasty sick highball V16 problems. However the lads showed what true boulders were made of and did it in Street Shoe Style, topping out on the nastiest of problems. After adding these to the ticklist we went forth to basecamp. Calls for a firewood run were made afterwards 2 very important lessons were learned. 1 - never ever ride in the back of big red sitting down (still think I've got a bruised posterier) and 2 - Maybe the sign that said "No cars beyond this point" was there for a reason !!! | ||
Shane almost sent the V16 | Basecamp in all it's glory | Big Red - Bugger!! |
Busy Climbing | Whanganui Bay - just magic | Mmm trout | Sat arvo saw some action on wet dreams, very aptly named little crag - for the face was wet, a 3 bolt problem was just soaking, pockets had water in them, the surface was mossy/licheny nasty stuff. Andy was first up on Lead. Tiger Shane and I followed. It defined sketchy. That evening a nice little campfire was struck up. |
Main Cliff | Andy having a go at Wet Dreams | Gratuitous Arty Campfire Shot |
| Sunday saw some serious climbing action. The lads all scared themselves on a nasty little 23, Hannes took a few whippers, Rich was getting nasty with a 24 at Wet Dreams. I think we need an official MojoZone camera crew because somehow I nearly always manage to leave the camera in the bag or be on belay when the good stuff is happening... Jen finally made her way to the Bay that evening and missed out on the climbing action - another lesson to be learned here, if you're going to the bay go with someone who knows the way! | ||

| The rain finally struck on Monday - an early evac was performed, too early for the likes of Liam! We all made our way to Bryces for some much needed coffee and food that didn't look taste or smell like baked beans! The Wharepapa Toll Booth struck once again, instead of relieving Bryce of shoes, this time the Rocknasium has new wall of Pusher Sloper & Organic madness, so if you're wondering where those sick new holds came from they are lent courtesy of Rich, Andy, Tiger, and Mojozone - Remember the P stands for Quality ! We expect to see some hard core problems being set on the main face shortly and nasty moves performed. | ||
The lads shopping | Mmmm slopey organic holds | |
| Monday arvo drove back to Jafaville - Rich couldn't keep his hands off the new holds so after a pitstop for coffee we hit the nasium. Quickly into a harness and setting began. Within no time the 20degree was covered in sick new holds and cranky moves were being thrown down on the wall. So there's even more photos to come... when will the madness end!!!! | ||
