Sibbald South Face
Sibbald South Face: Greig approaching the face
On 12 June, Greig Hamilton and Steve Fortune climbed the unclimbed south face of Mt Sibbald from the Godley Valley. From a campsite at the head of the Godley River North Branch, the pair climbed the 900m buttress to the right of the hanging glacier to the 2633m south peak, before climbing the ridge to the main summit.
The climb was a series of snow gullys and ramps, with occasional harder mixed steps, feeling about grade 4 overall. It would benefit from more ice later in the season, but was a quality, long climb in an overlooked, but very easily accessible area. Plenty of scope for harder lines exist on the buttress.
