World Dyno Record Broken
By Dougald MacDonald

Stefan Hadfield has broken the world dyno record by leaping 2.7 meters, or nearly 9 feet, from hold to hold. Hadfield made his body-length-and-a-half jump in Auckland, besting the old mark by 10 centimeters.

“Official” dyno contests are held on a 20-degree overhanging wall, with two large starting holds and a ladder of identical footholds. Contestants leap up and left at a 45-degree angle to catch a jug that is moved progressively farther from the left starting hold. In 2002, Briton Matt Heason set the old mark at 2.6 meters, and Katherine Schirrmacher established the women’s record of 1.9 meters.

World Dyno Record Broken
Report by Matt Heason, on 18 November 2004

Last weekend Stefan Hadfield of New Zealand beat the current world dyno record. The competition was the second organised in New Zealand using the official record format, and all was legitimate. At the first comp, back in July, he came close to equaling the record. But on Saturday, he not only equaled it but went another ten centimetres to 2.70m. The competition was run by the New Zealand Sportclimbing Federation. The womens record of 1.9m was also equalled. Hopefully a video will follow.
